APPROACH ANALYZE

Step One: What is the approach?

Generally: After my research on digital privacy, it feels appropriate to take an approach to educate those who use the internet; most people.

Specific Approach: Art - Tactical Tech introducing The Glass Room

Who promoted The Glass Room?

Tactical Tech is an organization that works “with an international audience of engaged citizens and civil society actors to investigate and mitigate the evolving impact of technologies on society.” with a vision of “a world where digital technologies can contribute to a more equitable, democratic and sustainable society. To enable this change, we investigate how digital technologies impact society and individual autonomy, using our findings to create practical solutions for citizens and civil society actors.:

Similar projects held by Tactical Tech

The top project is the data detox kit, which was featured in one of their Glass Rooms. The kit “offers simple steps you can take towards a more balanced and healthy digital lifestyle.” The project that speaks the most to this research project happens to be called Me and My Shadow. “Me and My Shadow is an online privacy resource that includes information on how to control data traces, tracking, and the data industry.”

Other Educational Methods

I came across their “A-Data-Day” poster which helped educate their audience on privacy concerns that went unacknowledged. The privacy issues are shown in this poster happen to held within the devices/apps private policies.

Step Two: Research on the approach

What is The Glass Room?

All over the globe, glass rooms are being introduced. The room set up to look similar to an electronics store such as Apple, but really only contains art. This art is helping educate people that come into the room about privacy. New York times comes forwards mentioning how the room appears like the Netflix show, Black Mirror while showing “the dark side of our digital footprint”.

What I enjoy:

  • Sneaky, the audience didn’t know what information they were receiving until it was received

  • Option for those to stay around if they are interested

  • Motivational, those in the room are more inspired to get their digital life in check

  • Bringing in outside projects into their room, being capable of explaining the A-Data-Day poster and the Data Detox Kit

  • Very focused on digital life and educating the uneducated

Where are the limitations:

  • Can flow without recognition easily, not everyone will be walking into a digital store down the street

  • Leaves the option for people to act or not act on their privacy issue

How I will apply this to my proposal:

  • It would be interesting to tie in this sneaky part of the proposal, to educate people without them recognizing it until it happens

  • Makes me question how I can get more recognition on my proposal

  • How can I spark the inspiration for change in people?

  • Great reminder to stay focused on the educating part of my proposal
